Diabete Calc

English version & Version Français

When i release version 1.2 of Diabete Calc, I told you that this version clenched Open Source. It has now been done, Diabetes Calc is a free software under the GPL V3. The source code of Diabetes Calc 1.2 is available on BitBucket.org : http://bitbucket.org/splanquart/diabete-calc/overview

Why do Diabete Calc a free software?

I wish Diabetes Calc is a reference computing applications of insulin. It is therefore necessary to ensure that all users that this software is available for very long and it continues to evolve for many years.

Proprietary software can not provide this guarantee. A large company can produce quality software and never do change. This is obviously not an interesting scenario for the community of its users. If this same software is free software, the community can re-assume the evolution of the software and adapt it to their needs.

The treatment of diabetes evolve every day and every year we see new drugs out of labs. It is therefore necessary to make a long term solution for calculating the dose of insulin.

What is a free software?

A "free software" is software ensures users' freedom to :

  • run
  • copy
  • distribute
  • study
  • change and improve the software

According to the FSF (Free Software Foundation), a free software is software that guarantees four freedoms:

  • The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
  • The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
  • The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3).

Why pay for free software?

Simply to ensure its development. The creation of software takes time. For example, Diabetes Calc request 20 days of development for version 1.2. You must add communication time.

Software without user's funding will die.
